| Description | Draft epitaph to Matthew Boulton. Epitaph sketch found in the papers of M. Boulton after his decease. [This appears to be Matthew Boulton’s own assessment of his life, evidently written at a moment when he considered it to be nearing its end: ‘Beneath this Stone was interd the Remains of Matthew Boulton Esq. F.R.S. He was the Founder of Soho, in this parish & the establisher of its Man…. [runs off edge of paper]. A lover & promoter of usefull arts A kind Friend to the poor And a Benevolent hearted Man on all occasions. He was an Active & usefull member of Society Through a long Series of Years But at length ceased from his Labours November 1808 in the 80th year of his Age.]
