| Description | "Requesting an order for leaving-books. Competition for the Newcastle Medal." Eton. March 29th. 1833. My dear Papa, I received Miss Burgess’ letter this morning, and, as you think it best, that I should have an order from Mr. Chapman for the leaving books, I should be obliged if you would write a letter, signifying your permission for me to get two leaving books, if you have no objection, as without a letter from home, Mr. Chapman will not give an order for them. The two boys, that I wished to give a leaving book to, are Thomson and Thring, The scholarship begins this week, the only boy in Mr. Chapmans house who tries for it is Thring, who, as he has so often tried before, has a very good chance of getting it. The boys who are in general thought most likely to get it, are Bailey, Mills, Thring, Goulburn Major, Simmonds, and Williams. Hugh William told me that he gets fagged a great deal, and does not seem to like his new situation, so well as at Mr. Atwood’s. A great many of the best rowers in the school, are going to leave, so that the boats will be very bad. Another boy in the house Coningham, who has been at home a great part of the half on account of illness, is going to leave, so that altogether five boys, are going to leave the house. The lock up is altered now to seven o’clock. I have not anything more to say, so with kind love to all at home, believe me to remain Your affectionate son, M. P. W. Boulton.
