| Description | "Promises to send the tradesman’s receipt for the payment of bookcase. Names of the boys constituting the mathematical class. Other Eton intelligence." (Sent by cross-post.)
Eton. Nov. 1st. 1835. My dear Miss Burgess, I received the parcel and money last night, and am very much obliged for it, I have not got the bookcase yet, but I will send the receipt in my next letter. I have not yet got either of the books from Dr. Hawtrey or Mr. Coleridge; for Dr. Hawtrey never gives his book till after the exercise has been read over in school, and I do not know at what time Mr. Coleridge gives his book. I believe that there are 15 boys altogether who learn of Mr. Girdlestone, the names of those in my set are, Shadwell , Hobhouse Ma, & Hobhouse Mi, besides these there are 3 other sets, in the 1st Northcote, Farrer, Frere, Sparrow, Balston; in another, Currey Max. Currey Ma. & Burnside, and in the 3d. Bullock, Belgrave, & Wagner; The removes are taken at Christmas, so that I shall then be in the upper Remove of the Middle Division, I have not heard anything more of my cloak, so I am afraid that it is lost. Mr. Wood is going to give lectures here, chiefly I believe on Architecture, but I attended him the last time he came, and I believe he has not got anything new. I forgot to tell you that amongst the pupils who learn of Mr. Girdlestone, Shadwell, Northcote, Farrer, and Balston, are Mr. Coleridge’s pupils; Northcote and Farrer are in the house. The comet has totally disappeared, now; I believe this is about the time for its nearest approach to the sun. Windsor Fair happened last week, but passed off without any disturbance, which has not happened for a long time. I heard from Montague a few days ago, and he seems to like Bradford very much, he says that his chief amusement is fishing. Give my love to all at home, and believe me to remain Yours affectionately, M. P. W. Boulton.
[In this description of the composition of the sets, a number has been added in pencil above each boy’s name, as follows: Shadwell (6), Hobhouse Major (6), Hobhouse Minor (6); Northcote (6), Farrer (5), Frere (5), Sparrow (6), Balston (5); Currey Maximus (5), Currey Major (5), and Burnside (5, MDW); Bullock (5), Belgrave (5), and Wagner (6). The significance of these numbers is not clear.] |
