Description"On his return to Eton."
Eton. Jan. 22nd. 1836
My dear Papa,
I arrived quite safe at Slough, at about half past seven o’clock, &, as it was quite dark, proceeded to Eton in a chaise, with Sandbach, an Eton boy, who had come from Liverpool, & was travelling in the same coach as myself.
Mathematics are not yet made a part of the School Business, but there are a great number of boys going to learn of Mr. Girdlestone, and there has also been a rule made, that all boys who learn of Mr. Hexter, after they have been with him a year, are to learn of Mr. Girdlestone.
Cotton is not yet come back, & is not expected till Saturday, but I do not know the cause of his delay; I do not think that there are any entirely new boys come into Mr. Coleridge’s, but there are two, who were formerly his pupils, but were not in his house. One of them is Pocock, a boy in the Upper Division, who used to be at Mrs. Holts, & the other, is Champernowne Mi. a cousin to a boy who is in the house.
Mr. John Wilder has got the small pox, and his pupils are obliged to remove to the Dames houses, to prevent catching it. Mrs. Holmes is living as house-keeper to Mrs. Yonge, the mother of the Yonge who was in the first class at Oxford. I have not heard or seen anything of Lord Lewesham, but I should think that he had arrived by this time. I do not think that I have anything more to tell you, so give my love to all, & believe me to remain
Your affectionate Son,
M. P. W. Boulton.
