Description"Wish to subscribe to the testimonial to be presented to Mr. Girdlestone. Leaving-book to be given to Mynors. Candidates for the next scholarship, &c. Approach of the holidays."

Eton Friday. 1836
My dear Papa,
I write to ask you if you have any objection, to my subscribing for a book which Mr. Girdlestones first class intend to present to him on his leaving Eton; I believe the one that has been chosen is Clarendons history of the Rebellion, & Hallams History of the Middle Ages, which will come to 2£ apiece.—Three boys leave in Mr. Coleridge’s house, Northcote, Hickes, and Graham; Northcote and Hickes are the 2 highest boys in it, when they have left there will be only 7 above me in the house; The only boy who leaves this time that I should like to give a leaving book to is Mynors, with whom I had my boat last year, and I should wish to know whether you would let me give him a better one than usual as he is one of my greatest friends, The examination for the scholarship begins on Monday, & will be decided on Saturday, a good many of Mr. Coleridge’s pupils go up for it, of whom Balston has a very good chance of getting it, & Goulburn, Northcote, & Farrer are likely to be pretty high; I suppose I had better write to Mr. Davis to secure me a place in the Tantivy, if so I should be obliged if you would tell me his direction in your next letter, for I am afraid I have forgotten it.—I have no more news to tell you, as it is so near the end of the half, so believe me to remain
Your affectionate son
M. P. W. Boulton.
