| Description | "Notice of his having been ‘sent up.’ Issue of the competition for the Balliol scholarship. Mr. Coleridge’s wish for him to read hard during the vacations."
Eton. Friday. My dear Papa, I just write to tell you that I have been sent up, which I did not expect this half. The Balliol scholarship was decided this day week, the first scholarship was given to a Rugby boy of the name of Cluff, I think; & the second to Northcote who was captain of my tutors house last half. Goulburn was the third, who is at present Mr. Coleridge’s pupil. Mr. Coleridge wants me to work very hard this holidays, as he intends me next half to go up for the scholarship, to try & get into the first twelve. He intends to tell you in a letter what he wishes me particularly to attend to. The weather here has been excessivley windy & on Wednesday the wind was so violent that the roofs of most of the houses were damaged, & a great many trees blown down.—I hope that all are quite well, give my love to all & believe me to remain Your affectionate son, M. P. W. Boulton
