Description"Account of the situation taken by him at the trials, and extenuation of alleged inattention."

My dear Papa
I am very sorry that you should have had any cause to complain of my conduct, I have therefore written in order to restore in some degree your good opinion of me, by informing you of my good success in trials, I am come in second in the remove, having thus taken thirty one places that is to say, all who were above me before, Hallam is captain, as every one expected. I am afraid I shall not have a book from Dr Hawtrey this half, though I have been sent up three times, because there will not be time to read us over this half. I shall however have a star, or mark to my name in the list, to shew that I have been sent up three times. I have been learning to swim, & can now swim pretty well. As my brother tells me we shall most likely be at Soho part of the holidays, we shall be able to bathe a little at home. I heard from Mr Smith a short time ago, he is still at Bradford, & does not seem likely to leave it.
I am afraid you will think this a very short letter, but as I have nothing to say, & we shall so soon meet, I dare say you excuse it, so with my love to all at home, believe me to remain your affectionate son
