Description"The masters object to the three pupils going up; and their representations to that effect. Dr. Hawtrey’s new regulation for limiting the number of pupils in the tutors’ houses."

Eton Thursday - - - 1838.
My dear Papa.
The masters after a full explanation of the case from my tutor, signed a letter to say that they did not think it fair for us to go up. Whether they will persist in this I do not know, for I have not heard much about the subject lately.—Coleridge & Cotton are of the same opinion as myself about not going up. However whichever way it may be settled, I shall not cease working for it.—There is a report that some boys in the school have the hooping cough. certainly there is a very bad cough prevalent, which I suppose is the consequence of the thaw. The weather however is very fine & warm.—A rule has been made by Dr. Hawtrey that no tutor is from this time to have more than 27 pupils, which used originally to be in force, but has for some time been disused. It will considerably reduce the number in Mr. Wilders & in my tutors, who this half has got 33 pupils.—Montagu was told by Mitchell, that Mr. Mitchell intends to leave Pusmoore , on account of the attempt to burn his house in the holidays, but that he does not intend to remove far from the neighbourhood if he can help.—Mansfields essay is I believe to be printed, which is to be done to all the essays in future, if it is I shall procure a copy.—Football & hockey are beginning again, but the floods are too high for boating. The captain of the boats Croft, is ill & has not been back this half, so that none of the crews have got exercised, & I am very much afraid, that if we have another match with the Westminster we shall get beated again.—Pray give my love to all, & believe me to remain
Your affectionate son
M. P. W. Boulton.
