Description"Further explanations about the dispute in regard to the Scholarship, and Mr. Coleridge’s opinion. Fossils received by him, and please. Cotton’s accident and absence. Book given him by his tutor."

Eton. Friday.
My dear Papa,
I should not think that the Masters themselves had any power to prevent us from going up, for the Scholarship, & I suppose if they persist in their protest, it will be carried before the Provost to decide. The letter which I spoke of was addressed to Mr. Coleridge stating that it was their opinion that we ought not to go up. I do not think I could procure a copy of it; as Mr. Coleridge said that he did not like to shew it us, for he did not think it proper to shew the Masters correspondence to the boys: but from what I understood him to say, it did not give any reason for their determination but merely stated what it was.—I suppose you have received Mr. Coleridges letter about the fossils, for he told me that he intended to write to you. He was very much pleased with them, & says they are the best specimens he has received. Cotton went home a day or two ago, on account of something the matter with his leg. When he was skaiting a rash broke out about his ancles, which he did not think anything of, but a little time he twisted his ancle a little in walking which made a very bad place there & quite lamed him. I daresay he will not be back again for a week. My tutor has given me a very good Livy in 3 volumes as a present, but I do not exactly know what for. I rather think it is because the books he gave me for the Scholarship were not quite 5 pounds worth, & this I suppose is to make up the deficiency. I had a letter from Mr. Atwood a little time ago in which he says that one of Mrs. Atwoods sisters, (the only one left) is dangerously ill. He is still at Mickleton, & does not speak of any chance of removal.—Pray give my love to all at home, & believe me to remain
Your affectionate son.
M. P. W. Boulton.
P.S. The scholarship begins next Monday week.
