Description"Result of the examination for the Newcastle Scholarship."

My dear Papa
I write to tell you that Cotton has got the Scholarship; which is the third scholarship that Mr. Coleridge has got running: Birch has got the Medal; Mansfield & myself are the two next, but Dr. Hawtrey has not said which was the higher of the two. The select was 5 smaller than last time, being only eleven. They were as follows.
+Cotton. Scholar.

Birch Medal.

+Boulton
+Coleridge
Hardisty
+Hotham
Kirwan
Mackarness
Mansfield
+Seymour.
Westmacott.
Those marked are my tutors pupils, so that he has got very nearly half the select. The scholarship has I think turned out on the whole rather contrary to expectation, for Cotton was not thought to have a very good chance, & Mansfield was generally expected to get it. Cotton has very nearly recovered from his illness, though he is not quite well yet. His brother is at present staying here.—We have had beautiful weather here for the last week, some of the days have been as hot as summer. Dr. Hawtrey has sent me up once for this half, & says that he intends to send me up again, which will be my 17th time.—Pray give my love to all, & believe me to remain
Your affectionate son
M. P. W. Boulton.
