My dear Papa
I have written to thank you for you kind present, which I recieved yesterday, & with which I was very much pleased. I hope to be able to earn another by my exertions this half year. The celebration of the fourth of June was to have been postponed till some days after the Montem, but Dr Hawtrey altered his intention soon after.
Mr Coleridge gave a supper last week in commemoration of the scholarship. Cotton of course was called upon to speak, which he did very well, Matthew was also called upon, but could not be prevailed upon to rise.
I began to bathe at the beginning of the half but the weather has been so cold & windy lately that I have almost discontinued it. Matthew & I have both tried our hands at fishing but with very small success. I have been trying to learn to cast.
Would you tell Miss Burgess to send me my red coat, as the buttons to be worn this time are to be different from those on my coat. I wish you were able to come to Montem & see us. Matthew is uncertain whether he will be sixth form or not at Montem, if he is Jones who was at Mr Attwood’s has promised to be his servant, that is, to attend him in a fancy dress, but if not, Jones is to be Cottons servant. We travelled down here with Lewisham, he told us that he had dragged the ponds, & caught a good many. Sir Francis Scott is going to take a double remove into the Fifth form, so that he is in trials now. Pray thank Aunt Bessy for the Toffee, for I suppose that it was her present, & with my best love to all at home Believe me to remain your affectionate son
