Eton. Wednesday. My dear Papa, I write to tell you that I have got the Essay, the list is as follows. Boulton Birch[“—Newcastle Medallist of last year” ] Coleridge[“—obtained the open Scholarship of Baliol College Oxford at the last election.”] Cotton[“—New[c]astle Scholar of last year.”] Hardisty[“—a senior of much longer standing in the School”] Mackarness Tarver. Blacker Cust Hotham Johnson Liddell Milman Ma. Yonge These were the only ones mentioned. Those in the same bracket are given out as equal, & are put in their alphabetical order.—We had two days of pretty good skating last week, & a great deal of snow. I had left my skates at home, but I got some lent me.—Mr. Coleridge was very much pleased I think with his fossils, he says he intends to come at Easter, & go over the caverns at Dudley. I hope Montagu is getting better, his friends here have been asking after him: I should think that the cold weather must be gone by this time.
