DescriptionLetter. Mary Burgess (London) to Matthew Robinson Boulton [? Soho] c. 11 Jul. 1839. “Has received the money for Montagu’s and his own leaving-money. Opinion of Montagu’s portrait.” (Two letters on one sheet. Directed in the first place to Hawkins’s Hotel, where it was presumably opened by Miss Burgess, who added a message of her own and forwarded it to M. R. Boulton, probably at Soho.)

Wednesday July 10.
My dear Papa,
I received the parcel & money quite safe last night, & am much obliged for it. I saw Montagu’s picture the other day in the study, I think it is like, but it seems to me too tall. Cottons picture has come to Dr. Hawtrey but I have not yet seen it. The day on which we leave is Monday July the 29th. We had a cricket match yesterday with the Kings men in which we were beaten, & they are going to have a boatmatch this evening with the collegers. We had a tremendous storm of thunder & lightning a few days ago, accompanied with violent hail which did a great deal of damage. It broke about a hundred panes in my tutors green house, & a gentleman in the neighbourhood had about 120 pounds worth of glass destroyed by it. Some of the hail stones measured four inches round. Cotton spent a day here a short time ago, as I dare say he has told you. Dr. Hawtreys intended decorations of the upper school have been put a stop to by the Provost, who says that if it is done at all the college ought to do it, & that they do not think it necessary. Will you be so kind in your next letter as to tell me how I ought to send my book boxes, whether by barge, or to Mr. Davis. Give my love to all, & believe me to remain
Your affectionate son
M. P. Boulton

In reply to this letter I should advise Matthew, if you approve it, to select a few Books for Holiday use at Tew, & send the remainder to Mr. Davis, who will forward them by Boat to Soho.—Since I began writing this the enclosed letter & note have come from Chalon we send it for your perusal of course we have told him that Montagu has left town but shall hear if he can do without him. The Plates are come of Ancient Norman & Saracenic Remains by Gally Knight they will be forwarded by Mondays box to Soho. Your Pens I send herewith. You will return Chalons note or rather Mr. Coleridges—& as you have been absent only two hours I can only add we rejoice in your fine day & hope to hear of your safe arrival.
With all our loves I remain
My dear Sir
Your obliged
M. Burgess
