| Description | This file contains correspondence of both Matthew Boulton and Matthew Robinson Boulton. The contents were formerly in a portfolio (123) entitled: Barker / Geoe / & / Barker & Unett 1797 / to / 1830
Under M. R. Boulton's scheme of arrangement the file was apparently placed in Box K. II, where it was when the Matthew Boulton Papers arrived at the Assay Office in 1921. The arrangement of documents within the portfolio has been obscured by re-arrangement subsequent to that date. The present arrangement follows that used in other similar files-"Copies" being grouped together separately at the end. The several packets of bills have been included in the main sequence, but it is possible that these too were kept separate, on account of their bulk.
The contents of the file therefore form two chronological series, as follows:
Letters and Bills. (1-115) Copies. (116-122)
Probably 74 and 78 originally formed one packet, but it has seemed convenient to separate them.
Inside the front panel of the portfolio is the following note, by M. R. Boulton: NB. For Correspondc of prior date see Generl Correspondents . . Letter B. The reference is evidently to the letters of George Hollington Barker, George Barker's father, which will be found in Matthew Boulton's General Correspondence under the years 1785, 1788, and 1795. |
