| Description | "Transmitting Mr. Mason's letter with complaints about Thornhill and intimation of his intention to quit. Request my instructions thereon." (Includes a transcript of a letter from James Mason to George Morris Barker, dated at Thornhill, 17 Mar. Redirected to Soho.) Birmm. March 18th. 1834. My Dear Sir, We beg to forward you copy of a letter which we have received from Mr. Mason and shall be glad to receive your instructions And we are Dear Sir Yours very faithfy. Barker & Son M. R. Boulton Esqre. Great Tew, Oxfordshire Please to turn over.
(Copy.) Dear George, I understand from your Father that Mr Boulton has consulted you respecting my liability to repairs of the boundary fence at Thornhill. I will thank you to inform Mr Boulton immediately that the whole range of pailings from the Bridge to the Turnpike Road is in a complete state of decay, and unless it undergo a substantial repair and the substitution of new posts &c it will shortly all come down together. It is quite out of reason and opposed to common sense to suppose that a Tenant at the six months' pleasure of his Landlord can be liable to repair what the Ravages of time and decay have effected on the protectional fence of the property. I wish to be inform'd as soon as possible whether Mr Boulton will order the necessary repairs to be effected. I will thank you to write to him to Tew and request an immediate answer that I may in case of his not conforming have the chance on the 25th inst of giving notice to quit a place of insecurity. As a proof of which, a party of Housebreakers actually bivouacd on the premises a short time since, having entered by forcing down the decayed fence. They were disturbed & left two Bottles of wine & Implements for Housebreaking behind them Yrs truly, James Mason Thornhill March 17. Mrs M. requests that you will add that one of the Copper Furnaces was found almost useless on our coming here, of which notice was given to Mr Robinson requesting it might be repaired-but it has never been attended to. The defect is a large hole in it. |
