TitleLetter. Robert Stevenson, Civil Engineer (Edinburgh) to Boulton & Plate Co.
LevelItem
Date6 March 1814
Description[Ordering for the use of the Northern Light Houses twelve circular plates of silvered copper for Reflectors, of the same quality and dimensions as those sent formerly. The invoice, made out to the Commissioners of the Northern Light Houses, is to be sent to Stevenson, and the plates themselves are to be forwarded to The Greenside Company. They are needed as soon as possible, either all together or in batches of three or four at a time. ‘As I foresee that a good many Reflectors will be wanted for the Northern Light Houses I would be very ready to send the Superintendant Light Keeper to Soho if you approve of it to get the proper instructions about the management of the metal and the polishing of the reflectors. I think the Light House service might be more benefited by this than any consideration of the expense that could attend his journey – he might also be able to get the coloured plates of glass of which I formerly wrote to you of better quality than we have yet been able to procure them. The person I mean was formerly a coppersmith & has been employed in making the Reflectors of a smaller size than they are now made. He is at present at one of the Light Houses in Argyleshire, from which he returns in a fortnight or three weeks & could be spared a short time afterwards to go to England.’]
