| Description | (This is probably the letter mentioned in, and transmitted with, 20.) Dear Sir I did not sufficiently explain myself last Night respecting one of the Orders from R & Co. You will find several Lines in the Order, with the Word omit wrote against it. These are all either Dipt Buttons ordered to be markt Gilt, or Silvered ones markt Plated which the Maker refused to make, and the Mercht: thought it necessary for his own Vindication, to shew his Original Order from abroad, & that what he had delivered was Copied Verbatim. I hope you will have time to consult Mr Nutting &c. upon our proposed description of a Gilt Button-they will I fe[ar] object to leaving off the Word London Gilt. You may depend upon my Attending to the Patterns &c. by the Coach to the Bull & Mouth. If you want me before you set out please to send a Messenger to the Warehouse. It would be a happy opportunity, if the London Makers wd insist upon having their Marks registered-and also a Clause respecting the Vile traffick of Patterns. Your faithful & Obligd. Friend James Alston March 19th. 1796 |
