At a General Town’s Meeting held pursuant to a Public Advertisement
Mr. Thomas Cooper for the High Bailiff in the Chair.
The Gentlemen deputed by the Committee appointed at a General Meeting of the Merchants and Manufacturers of this Town and Neighbourhood in pursuance of a Public Advertisement on the 26th. of March 1799, having laid before this Meeting a Statement of the Case of the Merchants and Manufacturers as presented to the Minister, and intended to be put into the Hands of the Members of the House of Commons, containing likewise a Refutation of the Objection made by the Mining Interest to the proposed Measure of permitting the Importation and preventing the Exportation of Copper under certain Circumstances.
Resolved,
That this Meeting approve the same, and request the High Bailiff to permit the Deputation to affix his Name thereto in behalf of the Town if they shall deem it expedient.
Resolved,
That the Committee and the Deputation are particularly requested to continue their Exertions for obtaining such Parliamentary Regulations in the Copper Trade as may tend to preserve the Manufacturers of this Town and Neighbourhood from that Ruin with which they are now threatned, and which must inevitably take place unless some Regulations be obtained.
Resolved,
That the Thanks of the Merchants and Manufacturers of this Town and Neighbourhood are due to the Deputation .
