| Description | This file does not appear in the Inventory compiled by Cheshire at the time of his departure from Soho on 15 Feb. 1812, though it may have been passed to William D. Brown to be kept at hand for reference. Under M. R. Boulton’s later arrangement the file was put into Box D. II, and it was probably in the same place when it arrived at the Assay Office in 1921.
While the Matthew Boulton Papers were in the custody of the Assay Office, most of the contents of this file were scattered (see the list of Old References), and thus the original arrangement has been obscured; indeed, it is not clear whether the correspondence for this year formed a discrete file, or whether, perhaps, they were combined with that of the following year.
Following the pattern of the later files, the documents have now been grouped alphabetically by the first letter of the correspondent’s name, and are arranged in chronological order within these groups.
The copy letters are all press-copies, except where otherwise stated. |
