DescriptionSir
Mr R Boulton, having been for some time in London previous to the receipt of your letter of the 20th ult’o was prevented from replying to it by an accumulation of business which formed during his absence, & after a very short interval he was under the necessity of making another journey to Town, where he now is.
The subject of your letter having been in part referred by Mr R Boulton to his Father I was in consequence directed to make some enquiries into the nature of the disagreements subsisting between Ann Woodward & her father-in-law with the view of preventing, as far as Mr B’s influence might go, any injustice from being done to a young Woman under the peculiar circumstances you describe & of whose good conduct you have borne such honorable testimony.
The result of my enquiries however throws little or no light on the subject.
To Miss Woodward’s narrative it is hardly necessary for me to advert as you are already in possession of all the particulars, & with respect to the allegations of the Father-in-law (which if attended to might lead to a conjecture that there have been in this, as in most family quarrels, some faults on both sides) I should be sorry to give that degree of credit which might invalidate his daughters assertions, especially as there is no third person to appeal to & their insulated situation precludes the evidence of neighbours. I shall therefore presume that Miss Woodwards conduct has been in every point of view irreproachable, but as I understand she does not wish for a preference in the Cottage Residence there seems a difficulty in perceiving how Mr Boulton’s interference in this case can be either beneficial or proper. Had the object been what is here alluded to I am confident that there wou’d have been a positive leaning to the daughter of the original occupier.
The question of turning out the present tenant while he continues to pay his rent, & of disposing of the Cottage Materials involves some difficulties on which Mr Boulton’s opinion & that of his Son will be taken so soon as a favorable opportunity occurs.
I am respectfully
Sir
your obt huml Servt
