M’r John Woodward
Dear Sir
Mr Boulton having been seized on Sunday evening last with a very alarming illness, from which he is not sufficiently recovered to sign his name, at his desire I write to you respecting Mr J Peill Jr, for whom I understand you are endeavouring to procure a situation;—as an introduction to which the importance of Mr Boulton’s certificate of his good conduct during his apprenticeship with him is sufficiently obvious, & he is much distressed that he cannot, from the cause here assigned, with his own hand bear testimony thereof.
Mr Boulton has therefore desired me to state to you that he is so perfectly satisfied with the uniform steadiness & good propensities of Mr Peill that he has no hesitation in saying, that he has not the least doubt but he would be a valuable acquisition to any Gentleman who may have occasion for a useful Clerk of a good moral character & whose talents, at present not inconsiderable, require only to be matured by age & experience, & he therefore strongly recommends him to any respectable situation that may offer,—confident that he will not discredit the recommendation here given of him.
I am, very respectfully,
Dear Sir,
your obt Servt
Wm Cheshire.
PS.
If there are any particulars desired respecting Mr Peill which cannot be satisfied by the foregoing general attestation Mr Boulton desires me to say that he shall have pleasure in directing me to reply to them.
Wednesday 1 oClock. It will give you pleasure to hear that Mr Boulton is rather on the mending hand & quite . . . & the paroxisms of pain less acute.
