| Description | Possibly concerning irrigation pipes made from hollowed tree-trunks: “It has been necessary to ? lay …this morning one of the new Trees leading from the Mint to Mr Boulton’s House; from the inspection of which Mr R. Boulton is inclined to think that the frequent failure of our Water Works originates no less from defects in the new Trees, than from the decay of the old ones. This Tree it appears was crack’d when put down & patched, at Mr Boulton’s expence, with a piece of sheet lead nearly equal in value with the Tree itself. I am desired by Mr Boulton to say, that he expects you will immediately replace this pipe with a sound & good one that will not be liable to crack & as the watering of the transplanted Trees cannot go on till this damage is repair’d I must request you will not lose one moment in complying with Mr Boulton’s desire.” |
