| Description | … We beg leave to observe that the alteration you propose (of leaving out the black where it is used as an edging to define the figures) cannot be made without redrawing the pattern & putting it afresh into the loom at an expence of ten or twelve guineas at least. We believe we stated that one colour might be substituted for another, but that must be throughout the whole design, not partially – any other colour may therefore be substituted for black if you wish to exclude black altogether but we really should recommend its being retained especially as on examination we find there is not more black in this design than in the original one – in which the figures were likewise defined by a black outline. The difference in the effect we conceive arises principally from the introduction of more colours in the altered design & the consequent want of breadth & boldness of effect – which we think will be greatly remedied by increasing the quantity of the Peach straw colours as you propose… …The Wilton heightens the richness of the colours – but is not thought to wear quite so well & is liable to have a shaded appearance, some parts looking darker than others in particular lights. The price [of Wilton or Brussels] is the same. |
