| Description | Birmingham, 16 June 1808. Mr. Cheshire. Sir, I find, on reference to my son’s letter, he says, “I have forwarded from Dublin per the Severn to Liverpool new farthings, amount £206. 8s. 7d., which I took of Irish value in payment for the wick yarn, or candlewick.” From the word new I am of opinion they are contract farthings originally from this country and probably liable to seizure. Our broker at Liverpool has not yet enter’d them at the custom house, but waits to know what he had better do. My son is a young man and very avourable receiv’d them for his goods. I will be much oblig’d if you will ask Mr. Boulton’s advice on the subject; shou’d they be seized it will be a great loss to me in my situation. Wou’d it be better to return them back to Dublin in same avour? Wou’d they be liable to seizure on the otherside the water? Cou’d Mr. Boulton give me a licence or certificate to send them? I will thank you for a reply, and am, with respect, sir, your obedient servant, William Lutwyche |
