Description(Directed to the Bedford Hotel, Covent Garden. With a paper wrapper.)
Soho, February 15th, 1811.
Sir,
Pursuant to the instructions in your letter of the 11th instant, I have made the necessary enquiries of Mr. Cadbury and now transmit his answers.
To the enquiry respecting the quantity of suitable black silk by him in August 1809—he replies, “That at this remote period it is not in his power to ascertain it; that his stock generally consists of about 3 pieces of that particular description of black sarsnet, viz. with black selvage, but of 3 different values.”
Question. “Does Mr. C. charge an extra profit on silk used for a funeral?”
Answer. “No.”
Question. “Are there any material variations in the quality, texture, or shade, in different parts of the same piece of silk?”
Answer. “If any such differences were observable, Mr. Cadbury would consider the goods imperfect, and feel himself warranted in returning them.”
Question. “Did Lander apply to Mr. Cadbury to be supplied with silk?”
Answer. “If any application was made to Mr. Cadbury to supply Mr. Lander with silk for the occasion of Mr. Boulton’s funeral he was not privy to it, and from enquiry of his shopman he believes that no such application was made.”
I have now to inform you that Mr. Cadbury has finished his examination of the silks and to-morrow I intend to transmit the particulars.
I am, respectfully, sir, your most obedient servant,
Wm. Cheshire
Geo. Barker, Esqr.,
