Mr. Boulton having received a satisfactory answer from Mr. Burt to his enquiries respecting your character, he is disposed to make trial of you upon the terms last mentioned, viz. forty-five guineas per year, tea, hair-powder duty. It is understood that your being out of livery is not to prevent you from performing any of the duties of the situation, as mentioned to you by Mr. Boulton. Your early reply is requested by, sir, your obedient servant,

PS. To prevent mistakes it may be proper to mention the heads of the duties which have been usually performed at this place by the upper footman:
Cleaning and replenishing the plated candlesticks.
Washing the glasses, morning and evening.
Dusting the dining-room, breakfast parlour, and study.
Getting the breakfast, taking it in, and waiting.
Washing the tea things.
Cleaning the plate.
Feeding the fires of best lower rooms.
Answering the bells.
Laying the cloth and decanting the wine.
Setting out the side-board and arranging the dinner table.
Waiting at table.
Clearing the dining table.
Getting tea, cutting bread and butter, and making toast.
Taking in tea and waiting.
Washing the tea things and desert plates (except on company days, when he has a. . .).
Shutting the windows and hanging the bells.
Taking in supper and waiting.
Seeing the doors, fires, and lights are safe.
Conveying messages to the Manufactory, &c.
Managing the brewing.
