TitleBills and Receipts.
LevelSub Series
Date1768 - 1774
DescriptionThe bills for this period were numbered in one sequence (1-3586), and these numbers match the numbers of the corresponding entries in the Cash Book. They have therefore been listed as a single file, but it is clear that they were formerly kept in smaller bundles. 53 bears the general label, “Bills paid Per JS in 68.”
Only the bills of the year 1768 approach completeness; those for the years 1769 to 1774 are scanty, and none at all have been found for the period from 1775 to 1787.
At the beginning of this period it appears that every line in the Cash Book (pp. 1-28) was given a number, whether it corresponded to a bill or not, and therefore it is likely that many of the items which appear to missing from the early part of the sequence (1-409) never existed.
1-60 have been listed in more detail than the rest of the bills. The housekeeper commonly known as “Mrs. Betty” has been referred to throughout by her proper name, Elizabeth (or “Elisbeth”) Marklew.
