DescriptionThe 'History books' in this series were created in Canada by managers acting for the Children's Emigration Homes. A letter from Ellen Ray, Canadian Manager, to Mr. Robert Plenderleith, Secretary of the Middlemore Homes in Birmingham, dated 5th April 1946 refers to the existence of seven history books - five 'Ontario books' and two books 'dealing with children placed in the Maritimes from 1897 - 1899' [MS 517/A/5/8/7]. Only four of these history books (four of the books relating to Ontario) appear to have survived. The books record brief details of each child sent to Canada, including details of the names and addresses of employers or families the child was settled with. The volumes include some cross-references to a sequence of 'Settlement and Report Books' which can be found catalogued at MS 517/A/8/5. Each 'History book' is arranged chronologically with an alphabetical surname index at the front. The books contain some notes and correspondence relating to particular children, pasted or inserted loose into the book. The date range given for each volume in this series reflects the original entries made in the book and does not include notes and correspondence inserted into the book at a later date.
