TitleBirmingham Auxiliary Tract Association of Friends
LevelSub Series
Date1815 - 1892
DescriptionOn the 9th January 1815, Samuel Lloyd, Richard Tapper Cadbury, George Boone, William Baker, James Baker, Joseph Enock, Benjamin Evans and others established the Birmingham Auxiliary Tract Association. A Tract Association of Friends had already been established in London in 1813, and the principle aim of the Birmingham group was to promote the aims of the London Association. This it did by circulating tracts from the London Tract Association of Friends, suggesting any new tracts deemed appropriate and by collecting subscriptions and forwarding them to London.

James Baker was the first Secretary, with Richard Tapper Cadbury as Treasurer and Benjamin Evans as Librarian. The Association's membership was made up exclusively of members of the Society of Friends, and initially only male members were allowed. Women Friends were first invited to attend a meeting in 1845, and sat on the Committee from 1850.

The volume consists of three volumes bound into one. At the end of the first volume there is a list of subscribers while volume three includes lists of titles of tracts and the quantities purchased for distribution as well as accounts and annual reports. The end of volume three includes a list of distributors, with the names of the streets they distributed tracts in for the year 1853.
