DescriptionFollowing the Manchester Conference in 1895, arranged by Yearly Meeting at the request of the Home Mission Committee to consider the life and work of the Religious Society of Friends and the future of Quakerism, the summer school movement was established to provide Friends with the opportunity to broaden their knowledge of Quaker theology and history. The first summer school took place in Scarborough in 1897, with a panel of speakers including Rendel Harris and H.G. Wood (both of whom were to later to become directors of Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre, Selly Oak) and in 1899, the summer school met in Birmingham.
