TitleHome Care Call Committee

Date1986 - 1994
DescriptionFollowing Monthly Meeting minute 84/148 in which concern was expressed regarding the provision of housing for the elderly, a working party was appointed to establish what the existing and anticipated needs of older members of the Society of Friends were. Following a questionnaire sent out to elderly Friends, it found that there was considerable interest in the provision of a home call care or personal alarm service for the elderly so that Friends could remain in their own homes rather than going into care homes.

It was decided to establish a Home Care Call Committee in May 1986. Working with 'Help the Aged' Lifeline Alarm Appeal which provided Tunstall Telecom Piper Lifeline Units, the Committee purchased 30 units and selected the Emergency Response Unit section of Orbit Housing Association in Coventry to operate the personal alarm service.

The Committee received applications for the units through recommendations from overseers or those managing waiting lists for Friends' residential homes for the elderly and allocated the personal alarm units to applicants according to their health, personal home circumstances and degree of risk. It also liaised with Help the Aged regarding the administration of the Home Care Call scheme.

See SF/2/1/1/24 and SF/2/1/1/32/4 for additional records relating to care of the elderly.
