TitleDudley Double Lecture
LevelSeries
Date1723 - 1864
DescriptionAccording to an entry in notebook UC 2/13/1/1/1 the Dudley Double Lecture took place immediately after, and in consequence of, the Act of Uniformity, 1662, and was established by the ejected Ministers of Dudley and the surrounding region that lost their livings as a result of that Act. Some of these ministers later founded Unitarian congregations, which included the New Meeting in Birmingham. The lecture was maintained in commemoration of that event and 'with the view of maintaining and extending the principles of Dissent'. There are no records of Ministers who preached prior to 1723. The lectures were traditionally held at Dudley, or nearby Oldbury, and attended only by Unitarian Ministers. The two lectures were conducted by a guest minister, occasionally from overseas, preceded by a devotional service.
