| Description | Small notebook compiled by Thomas Lee, detailing income as a result of various subscriptions and the various legal and other expenses incurred during the aftermath of the Priestley Riots of July 1791. The nature of the expenses (i.e. travelling, costs of attending court sessions and committees held in London, distribution of handbills). The entries provide a useful diary of events and the activities of the Committee of Protestant Dissenters in Birmingham in attempting to bring the rioters to justice. For example, one entry of 1 August 1792 reads: 'By Cash paid. Mr Robert Bertles for copying Affidavits & Papers respecting the Riots - for information of the Member of the House of Commons previous to the Motion for an Enquiry into the Riots...£5. 8s. 6d'. The documents were originally stored in an orange file bearing the title given above. |
