DescriptionRe Priestley Riots: evidence of Cornelius Upton on two persons, [Joseph] Carless [Carles] and [Benjamin] Spencer, visiting the Swan Inn, Bull Street, Birmingham, on 14 July 1791, stirring up a group, promising to get them drunk, then leaving to break the windows of a nearby hotel etc. Carless and Spencer were magistrates of the town who were believed to have sympathised and colluded with the rioters (see description in catalogue record UC 2/15).
