| Description | Correspondence file containing correspondence, minutes, leaflets, agendas, programmes, circulars, periodicals and funding requests relating to the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). Applicant overview: NCVO began in 1919 as the National Council of Social Services, following a legacy from Edward Vivian Birchall who died of wounds in France during World War I. Since this time NCVO continues to support the sector and speak to government against an ever-changing social background. Many now well-established voluntary organisations started out as projects within NCVO, including Age Concern, Citizens Advice Bureaux and Community Matters. During the early 1980s NCVO expanded its work on the UK's multi-racial society and its positive implications for society as a whole.
