Applicant overview: Quaker Peace and Service (QPS, now Quaker Peace and Social Witness, QPSW) was formed by the union of the Friends Service Council and the Friends Peace Committee. Its activities in southern Africa were increased due to conflict in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe between the white and black communities. Nature of support: In 1978 the Trust agreed to a grant of £2,000 to relief and resettlement work in Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) occupied parts of Rhodesia/Zimbabwe. That same year the Fund provided £200 to allow the son of a murdered minister in Zimbabwe to return from London for the funeral. This figure was later modestly increased. In 1979 the QPS received a grant of £3,000 to allow two of its members to travel to Zimbabwe. In 1980 the Fund provided a travel grant to the QPS to allow a Friend to help organise elections in Zimbabwe. Several other travel grants/loans were also made through the QPS.
