Applicant overview: Youthaid was established by the union of a number of youth organisations to address issues relating to youth unemployment. It was registered as a charity in 1977. Youthaid aims to 1) advance the education of young persons who are unemployed by providing vocational training, 2) provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreational and leisure time occupation with the object of improving the conditions of life for such young persons, 3) promote or undertake research into the causes and solutions of unemployment among young people, into the education and training of such young people and into the problems of such young people in their communities and to publish resulting research. The Unemployment Unit was created as the non-charitable arm of Youthaid and to cater to the unemployment needs of youth and adults through education and advocacy. Clare Short was the initial Director of both Youthaid and the Unemployment Unit. Nature of support: The Fund provided a series of grants the Unemployment Unit from its inception at £5,000 per annum rising to £10,000 per annum for 1983 and 1984.
