Applicant overview: The Aekta Clothing Industry Action Research Project was set up under joint sponsorship of the West Midlands County Council (WMCC) and Handsworth Law Centre (HLC) with full funding from the WMCC in late 1984. The project's main aims are to, 1) examine and monitor working conditions in the clothing industry in and around Birmingham, 2) provide information on employment law, minimum rates and other employment rights, and 3) develop close links with community, ethnic and other organisations concerned with these issues. The main beneficiaries are low-paid workers in the industry, mostly women and mostly Asian in origin. The project is based on Soho Road, Handsworth and is managed by a sub-committee of the HLC with representatives from the WMCC.
