Date1983 - 1994
DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, agendas, grant overview, newspaper cuttings, copies of published material, constitution, accounts, project proposals and funding requests relating to the Community Radio Training Project (CRTP) and the Peoples Community Radio Line (PCRL). Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: The PCRL is a local pirate community radio station based loosely in Winson Green. The station serves inner city Birmingham with a wide range of black music forms, as an outlet for news and discussion. PCRL aims to become legitimate as a result of government decisions to allow a limited number of local radio stations. In 1986 the CRTP was launched by a series of community organisations led by the Afro-Caribbean Resource Centre Ltd. (ACRC) and PCRL. The project aims to 1) offer the provisions required in order to gain education in the field of media and radio broadcasting, 2) operate to the highest possible media standards, so as to gain credibility within the broadcasting institutions that exist, 3) offer access to the world of broadcasting and radio production to individuals who would otherwise never be given the change to gain this type of experience by the existing bodies, 4) assist in improving the broadcasting standards of the presenters on PCRL by allowing them to have access to equipment and facilities not normally available to them, 5) involve groups and individuals with a message to look into using the media in a more effective way to their benefit, 6) provide much needed black media training initiatives in the Birmingham area, and 7) provide a relevant and practical media training programme seeking assistance from those involved in existing media organisations either from the PCRL or the BBC. In 1994 the CRPT became Fusion FM Community Radio. Nature of support: In 1986 the Trust approved three grants of up to £15,000 per annum to the PCRL paid through the ACRC. These funds were allocated to training costs and the salary of a development officer. In 1990 two grants of £15,000 were approved to the CRTP plus a single grant of £7,500 for the development officer post. These grants were used for Minutes: B&GSCT 6394, B&GSCT 7280. Notes: File organised from newest to oldest. File numbered 'C/5'.
