Applicant overview: Peace People was established in 1976 following a tragic shooting and car crash involving the British Army and the IRA. Peace People, 1) work for the creation of a just and peaceful society in Northern Ireland, 2) bring young people together through the group Youth for Peace, 3) provide support and advice for prisoners and their families, and operate a resettlement scheme through which ex-prisoners and others can escape from the vicious cycle of violence and fear, 4) promote dialogue between political groups, inform people about political and social issues, 5) campaign for the creation in Northern Ireland of a system of justice based on the highest standards of justice and respect for human rights, 6) work through an open democratic structure, 7) publish the monthly newspaper 'Peace by Peace', and 8) provide proof every day that Northern Irish people can work together to peacefully solve their problems. Nature of support: In 1987 the Trust agreed to three annual grants of £5,000 to support staff work with prisoners and their families. In 1988 the Fund agreed to allocate £630 of the annual Peace People grant as a maternity payment. In 1989 three further salary grants were approved at £7,000 per annum subject the new appointee completing a six-month probationary period. A small grant was also made to the outgoing post holder of £200. In 1992 the Trust made a further grant to the welfare officer post of £7,000 for 1992/1993 followed by two further annual grants at £12,500. In 11994 the Trust agreed to a single grant of £10,000 to allow Peace People to purchase a bus to transport families on prison visits. In 1995 on the advice of Northern Ireland Programme Relevant Trustees three further salary grants were approved at £14,000 per annum. In 1998 the final grant was rescinded.
