Funding source(s): Barrow Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) was established as a registered charity in 1962 to 1) advance education and aid in the relief of poverty, 2) promote the effective use of resources for the purposes of advancing education, 3) promote the voluntary sector, 4) send volunteers to share and develop their skills, 5) undertake and assist in works and projects of all kinds and 6) educate the public concerning the nature, causes and effects of poverty and limited education in other countries and to conduct and pursue research concerning these matters and to publish the results. VSO seek to work with partner agencies in countries of the South to develop national volunteering programmes so that international volunteering is not seen as something that only people from the North have the opportunity and aptitude to do. VSO also makes overseas voluntary placements, usually for two years, including opportunities for disabled volunteers. Nature of support: In 2002 the Trust approved grants totalling £57,600 over two years towards its national volunteering programmes. In 2004 the Trust offered a further £50,000 for the same purpose over two years. Minutes: TM04/05-009, BCT 1175. Notes: File organised roughly from newest to oldest. File numbered '3/2-r'. |
