LevelFile
Date1984 - 1985
DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, agendas, leaflets, reports and funding requests relating to various peace and international project applications. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: The Brotherhood of British Scouts (BBS) broke away from the Boy Scouts Association in 1908 due to disagreements over the militarism associated with the latter organisation. Barrow Cadbury supported the BBS during its early years. David Hart is an academic at the University of East Anglia, Department of Environmental Studies researching nuclear power and nuclear weapons. Nature of support: Many of the grant applications in this file were rejected for various reasons. The Refugee Studies Programme at Oxford applied for funds but this application was denied due to questions of the viability of the project. The Turkish Peace Association approached the Trust for support but as no specific project was articulated the Trust could not act. The West Midlands International Institute for Peace and Disarmament applied for a large grant towards the £150,000 to become established. Trustees declined to support this project, feeling that other peace initiatives offered more promise. In 1985 the Trust approved £250 towards the costs of a history of the Brotherhood of British Scouts. That same year the Trust also approved a grant of £1,500 to support the research fellowship of David Hart into the implications of civil nuclear energy generating programmes.
