Date1974 - 1982
DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, reports, leaflets, accounts, project specifications, invitations and funding requests relating to organisations working in southern Africa. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: The Catholic Institute for International Relations (CIIR) was invited to send an advisor to accompany a parliamentary delegation to the Washington D.C. to discuss the ramifications of elections in Rhodesia with members of Congress and other officials at a meeting organised by the African-American Institute, the Washington Office on Africa and the United States Catholic Conference. The Black Consciousness Movement of Azania (BCMA) was formed to represent various oppressed groups in southern Africa. The aims of its central committee are to 1) co-ordinate the activities of the groups making up the BCMA in Africa and abroad, 2) formally constituting the external wing of the BCMA to build support for liberation, and 3) establish and maintain contact with solidarity groups, churches, progressive governments and international bodies to increase commitment and support for the Azanian people. The Political Students Association of South Africa (POLSTU) is a South African based organisation created with the aim of 1) full and equal citizenship and political participation by all the people born or naturalised within the territory of South Africa as of 1961, 2) a just economic system providing equal and universal access to the benefits of the economy, 3) the abolition of statutory discrimination, and 4) an education system with equal access for all. The Lincoln Trust was created by Donald Woods to collect accurate news of developments in South Africa. Nature of support: The Trust provided a grant of £1,000 towards the expenses of the CIIR representative at the Washington talks. The BCMA applied for support for its new London offices to the Trust but questions raised over the peaceful aims of the organisation did not lead to grant support. The aims of POLSTU were of interest to the Trust and a grant of £2,500 was considered. Due to financial constraints the Lincoln Trust was not offered a grant. Minutes: B&GSCT 4859, B&GSCT 5261, BCF 2177, BCF 2178. Notes: File organised by date from newest to oldest. File numbered '2/4/1'.
