LevelFile
Date1974 - 1976
DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, agendas, newspaper cuttings, accounts, reports, leaflets and funding requests relating to the Handsworth Black Community Workers project (HBCW) and the Harambee Housing Association's (HHA) Marcus Garvey Pre-School Project. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: The BCW was created as a result of the union of Handsworth Adventure Playground, Double Zero Club and 40 Hall Road. In its funding application the BCW defines itself as part of the West Indian black community with an emphasis on homeless youth, school and education, unemployment, bad police relationships and cultural activities. The Harambee Housing Association (HHA) charity was created through the BCW with the support of the Social Services Department and the Birmingham Settlement to address youth homelessness and pre-school care. The HHA established the Marcus Garvey Pre-School Project to, in their words, 1) provide a social situation for children of pre-school age (2 years to 5 years) that will constitute a real learning situation, 2) provide a structural programme of educational activities relevant to the pre-school experience which will enable the children to develop necessary skills, including language development and concepts, 3) provide a secure environment which is responsive to the values of the cultural heritage of black children and will enable them to develop a positive identification with that culture, 4) prepare pre-school children for the school environment, 5) encourage parents to become involved in the education of their children and further understand their children's needs, and 6) impress upon parents the importance of the pre-school years and play activities involving toys etc. The HHA also has an interest in adult literacy work with the aim of establishing an adult literacy centre. Nature of support: A Trust grant for £3,000 was made to the Marcus Garvey Pre-School Project in March 1975. A number of single follow up grants were also made. Five thousand pounds was also allocated for an adult literacy centre. As of 1974 the Trust was paying in full or part for five HHA staff. A number of small grants were made to support HHA staff by the Fund.
