| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, leaflets, newspaper cuttings, reports and funding requests relating to community work in Handsworth, particularly play projects. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: The Double Decker Project (DDP) is a project designed by the Birmingham Community Relations Committee (BCRC), formally the Birmingham Liaison Committee for Commonwealth Immigrants, to use a double-decker bus to coordinate summer play activities across the city with the cooperation of Handsworth Adventure Playground, Hockley Adventure Playground and Hockley Port Development. Answer provides holidays for those in need in Handsworth, Small Heath, Balsall Heath and Winson Green. The Lozells Social Development Centre (LSDC) is the base for a number of local organisations including All Faiths for One Race, Community Planning Associates and Trapeze Newspaper. The Handsworth Debating Forum (HDF) is a humanitarian organisation formed by West Indians with the aim of creating more, and better, opportunities for social and cultural activities in Handsworth, to provide support in matters of housing, racial problems, adult and youth employment and in any other area as appropriate. Nature of support: The Trust provided two one off small grants to the DDP and Answer in June 1973. A request by LSDC for a grant to support staff costs was declined given that the Trust was already funding most of the constituent organisations at the Centre. The Trust supported an HDF application to allow a number of its members to attend a 'Law for Councillors and Social Workers' course. Minutes: B&GSCT 3669, B&GSCT 3673, B&GSCT 3760, Notes: File organised by date from newest to oldest. File not numbered. |
