Date1980 - 1983
DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, agendas, minutes, copies of published material, project proposals and funding requests relating to the Racism Awareness Programme Unit (RAPU). Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: RAPU was established in 1980 by a group of academics and educators interested in decreasing the prevalence of racism. The project aim is to develop a set of techniques and methods for changing the behaviour and attitudes that are affected and continue to be affected by racism. The basic premise of the RAPU approach is the recognition that in Britain racism is a white problem. Until this point is addressed the creation of a truly multi-racial society will be impeded. RAPU's activities involve training, education and research projects including 'white awareness seminars'. Nature of support: In 1982 the Trust approved a single grant of £8,000 for the financial year 1983 -1984 towards the salary of a project administrator. This offer was subsequently withdrawn following internal disagreements within RAPU. In 1983 a grant of £5,000 was made by the Trust towards the cost of office supplies and furniture. That same year a small grant of £100 was made to cover the fees of black youth workers attending RAPU racism awareness training courses. Minutes: B&GSCT 5514, B&GSCT 5852, B&GSCT 5864. Notes: File organised from newest to oldest. File numbered '3/14'.
