Applicant overview: In 1979 major rioting occurred in Southall, London, where members of the National Front (NF) clashed with community members and the Anti-Nazi League (ANL). As a result of the violence one person was killed, over one hundred were injured and over four hundred arrested. An independent enquiry was proposed by the National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL) to investigate police performance and the nature and motivations of those involved in the disturbances. Nature of support: In 1979 on the advice of Southfield Trustees up to £6,000 was committed to the enquiry. Later that year a further £1,500 was allocated to the NCCL to cover additional costs.
