Afeme aims to, 1) encourage young unemployed and disadvantaged people to take part in sport and recreational activities with an aim to encourage a feeling of self-esteem and confidence within themselves, 2) reach a proportion of black youths and other young people who are experiencing alienation from society and in particular existing provisions, 3) increase involvement of young people in the management process and encourage their educational development through recreational activities, and 4) encourage young people to become more involved in the wider community through the activities provided by the Organisation. Nature of support: In 1986 the Fund approved a single £500 grant to AYO to help establish the organisation. A further £1,000 was allocated to general running costs that same year. That same year the Trust agreed to commit £2,000 per annum to AYO. This grant was rescinded in 1988. In 1987 a single grant of £9,000 was made to appoint a full-time worker.
