| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, reports, newspaper cuttings, agendas, copies of published material and funding requests relating to the Northern London Preservation of the Rights of Prisoners (PROP). Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd., Southfield Trust. Applicant overview: PROP was formed in 1977 with the following aims: 1) to try to explain crime as the result of a defective society that must be changed through education, 2) to-cooperate with other organisations with similar interests, 3) to ensure prisoner rights are protected, 4) to break down the wall of secrecy around prisons, particularly the use of the Official Secrets Act, and 5) to conduct research into crime, prison conditions, the after effect of prisons and the erosion of human rights in prison. An earlier, more informal incarnation of PROP operated prior to 1977. Nature of support: Southfield Trustees recommended to the Fund that up to £1,600 in grants be made to support the running costs of PROP in 1977. A further £3,000 was provided toward the salary of Ted Ward once a management committee was established. When this was done the salary total was increased by £640. Financial support for Mr Ward was discontinued by 1978. Minutes: B&GSCT 4984, B&GSCT 4985, BCF 1616, BCF 1667, BCF 1713, ST 21/77, ST 26/77, ST 2/78, ST 17/78, ST 24/78.
