Applicant overview: Brown is Director of the Department of European Languages and Institutions, Cranfield Institute of Technology carrying out research on police methods. ‘Policing by Multi-Racial Consent’ followed his first book, ‘Shades of Gray’. Both works proved contentious in the media. The primary aim of the Cranford M.Sc. Research Programme in Social Policy and Institutions, which Brown directs, is to provide professionally qualified and experienced people in the statutory and voluntary services with an academic opportunity by which to contribute research of a practical value to their own institutions or to society at large. Nature of support: The Trust provided a small grant to support a conference the prevention of crime in Europe to the Cranfield Institute. A series of small grants were also made to support aspects of John Brown's research and transport costs. A Fund grant was also made to a superintendent of the Derbyshire Constabulary to travel to the United States to study crowd control techniques.
